Liège is a very student-oriented city, and many Erasmus students come to discover the lively Belgian nightlife. Between nights out in the Carré, bars, garden parties, apéros, and student events, there is almost always something going on. But even though the atmosphere is generally friendly, it is important to keep a few safety habits in mind when you go out.
The most important piece of advice is probably to head home with someone else when possible, especially late at night. Many students walk back together after parties, take the same bus, the same tram, or share a taxi. Even though Liège stays lively quite late as a student city, it is always better to avoid going home alone, especially if you do not know the city well yet.
As anywhere else, you should also keep an eye on your drink during nights out. Avoid leaving a beverage unattended, and do not accept a drink from a stranger unless you have seen it being prepared. These are simple tips, but they matter in any student city.
When public transport is no longer running, many students use taxis or ride-hailing apps to get home more easily and avoid long walks at night. Before heading out, it is also worth checking the last bus or tram times to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
It is also a good idea to keep your phone charged, bring a power bank if possible, and let a friend know if you change location or head home earlier than planned.
Finally, do not forget that emergency numbers vary by country and continent. In Belgium:
- 112: European emergency number (ambulance and fire brigade)
- 101: police
Even though Erasmus nights out often create some of the best memories, taking a few precautions is what allows you to enjoy Liège with peace of mind and get home safely after a great evening.
