If there is one event that people in Liège look forward to every year, it is the Nocturne des Coteaux de la Citadelle. Usually organised on the first Saturday of October, this evening completely transforms the historic districts of Liège into an almost unreal atmosphere.
The concept is simple: the famous Coteaux de la Citadelle, the small historic streets, stairways and especially the Montagne de Bueren are illuminated with thousands of candles. Every year, more than 20,000 candles are placed throughout the streets and along the 374 steps of the Montagne de Bueren, creating a unique atmosphere across the entire city.
But the Coteaux are not just “about candles”. Throughout the evening, the streets become alive with small concerts, animations, street performers, light shows, cafés full of people and bars packed with students and visitors enjoying the atmosphere. Some places also organise special activities and parties during the event.
Young people especially love this night because the atmosphere feels completely different from a classic party or night out. The whole city seems to be outside at the same time, the streets are full of people, you move from one place to another with friends, discover hidden corners of Liège and enjoy an atmosphere that feels much warmer and more friendly than a regular night in a bar or club.
